Sharing your iTunes Library between OS X and Windows

My main computer is an Apple MacBook Pro running both OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 using Boot Camp. I tend to boot between the two operating systems quite frequently so I wanted to see if it was possible to share my iTunes library between them.
It turns out that this is quite easy to set up. This guide assumes that the OS X iTunes library is your 'main' library and that iTunes is set to "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized".
By default, the OS X version of iTunes stores your iTunes library in a file called "iTunes Library" under ~/Music/iTunes. You'll need to rename this file in order to give it a .itl extension in order for the windows version of iTunes to use it (the OS X version of iTunes can use the file both with or without the .itl file extension).
On your Windows partition install MacDrive. This is a $49 piece of software that allows you to read and write mac-formatted drives from under Windows*. Once this is installed, your OS X partition will be available to read and write (in my case, as the "E:" drive)
In Windows, delete your existing iTunes folder (under %USERPROFILE%MusiciTunes) and then create a symbolic link that points to your Mac iTunes library. This can be done by opening a command prompt and issuing the following commands:
mklink /d iTunes E:Users<Your username>MusiciTunes
You should see output like this:
Note: The mlink command is only available in Windows Vista or newer
At this point you should be able to open iTunes and your library should be available. The only irritation I've found is that each time you switch operating systems iTunes has to re-build the library. My library is very small so this only takes a few seconds. On a larger library this could be more problematic.
* Note: if you don't want to pay for MacDrive you could always reverse the process and keep the main iTunes library under Windows and then use MacFuse to read/write your windows partition from under OS X.
